The Valais region is one of the most impressive Alpine areas in Switzerland, defined by its glaciers, perpetual snow, and dramatic landscapes shaped by altitude. Within it, Zermatt and Saas-Fee stand out as two extraordinary high-mountain destinations, both preserving a serene and unspoiled atmosphere as entirely car-free villages, which deepens the connection with nature.
Zermatt is internationally famous for its location at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains on the planet, whose pyramidal horn of metamorphic rock was sculpted as multiple glaciers simultaneously eroded the mountain from its different faces. To discover this unique setting, a perfectly integrated Alpine transport network carries visitors toward expansive glaciers, panoramic viewpoints, and ski areas operating almost year-round. Here, the contrast between ice, rock, and sky feels as powerful as it is elegant.
Saas-Fee, known as the “Pearl of the Alps,” offers a more intimate yet equally striking experience. Surrounded by more than a dozen peaks soaring above 4,000 meters, the village sits directly in the heart of a glacial circo. Its high-altitude cable cars open the door to ice platforms, subterranean glacier tunnels, and peaceful Alpine trails where the monumental scale of the landscape takes center stage. This journey will be etched in my heart forever, as I shared it with my mother and very special friends.
A large portion of this territory is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting the exceptional natural and geological value of its landscapes. The crown jewel of this heritage is the Aletsch Glacier, a giant over 20 kilometers long and up to 800 meters thick in some areas, revered as the largest and most monumental river of ice in the entire Alps. Gazing upon this immense frozen ribbon winding through the peaks offers a profound understanding of how the Alpine landscape came to be, and in the summer, it feels like an oasis, one of the most refreshing experiences you can find.
Zermatt and Saas-Fee are far more than traditional ski resorts. They are a true journey into the Alpine mystique, a magnet whose ancient magic has drawn kings, artists, and prominent figures for centuries, and continues to attract travelers from every corner of the world today, driven by an unforgettable desire to behold the untamed majesty of these peaks.
