Bern is, without a doubt, one of my favorite cities in the world. It has a timeless, classic beauty that feels calm and elegant at the same time. Its perfectly preserved old town seems to exist outside of time, where history, daily life, and harmony come together naturally.
The city’s main street runs through the heart of Bern and leads to one of its most iconic landmarks, the Zytglogge. Every hour, the astronomical clock comes to life with moving figures in a small mechanical performance that feels almost surreal. Watching it is a simple yet unforgettable experience, one that captures the character of the city perfectly.
Bern is also deeply connected to the figure of Albert Einstein, who lived and worked here during some of the most important years of his life. The city is home to two museum spaces dedicated to his legacy, including the Einstein Museum Bern, where his ideas, personal history, and influence on modern science are explored. This strong link between knowledge, history, and place is a key part of Bern’s identity.
That identity is further reflected in one of the city’s most recognizable symbols, the bear. The name Bern is traditionally associated with the German word Bär, meaning bear, which explains why the animal appears on the city’s flag and throughout its streets in the form of statues and symbols. This connection comes to life at the Bern Bear Park, where bears remain a living part of the city’s heritage.
Bern is a masterclass in balance, it does not need to shout to leave a mark; its quiet confidence and timeless spirit stay with you long after you leave.
