Bulgaria | Sofia, A Subtle Beauty

Sofia entered my life as one of those unexpected destinations you choose out of pure practicality. When I first started traveling, I had to leave the European Union every few months —the classic Latina rhythm of passports and borders— so I needed a place to step out, breathe for a moment, and reset my days on the road. That’s how Sofia appeared: not as a dream destination, but as the next stop life placed gently in front of me.

Before going, many people asked what I was even planning to do there, as if Sofia were a city without purpose. But I’ve always believed in seeing things with my own eyes. That is the beauty of traveling: feeling, tasting, touching, discovering without filters. And Sofia, for me, became a quiet surprise.

The city is big but approachable, with a mix of history and modern life that blends without trying too hard. It’s affordable, accessible and filled with food that honestly impressed me. There is something authentic about it —a city that doesn’t pretend, that reveals itself slowly, corner by corner. And as a woman traveling alone, I felt safe, calm, and fully present.

What began as a bureaucratic exit became a gentle pause in the middle of my nomad life. Sofia turned into a reminder that even the most unexpected places can hold warmth, flavor and meaning. I’m grateful I went, walked it, felt it.

Traveling is also about giving places a chance to surprise you… especially the ones you never planned to love.
