Last summer, my university friends and I decided to explore a bit more of Switzerland. We rented a car and headed straight down south to the Italian-speaking region… it was so cool! There, we came across spectacular landscapes and villages built entirely of stone that completely stole our hearts.
Our first stop in the Verzasca Valley was Lavertezzo, famous for its iconic stone bridge. We specifically wanted to go there because it’s the ultimate spot to jump into the river and cool off in the summer. The sound of crystal-clear water flowing between smooth rocks and the open landscape create an incredible scene that invites you to dive in or simply admire the view.
Continuing along the same valley, we reached Corippo, a small stone village guarded by the river running right beside it. The feeling upon arrival is immediate: its old houses, narrow alleys, and deep silence make you feel as if time stood still centuries ago.
Then we moved to the neighboring valley to visit Maggia, another beautiful village with the river flowing alongside it. Maggia maintains that same traditional stone aesthetic, but with a deeply mystical vibe… it feels like a real witches’ village! The slow pace of life, the architecture, and the wild nature surrounding it wrap you in a magical atmosphere.
And, of course, the trip wouldn’t have been complete without the food. Dining in this region makes you feel as if you were right in Italy: enjoying delicious homemade pasta set against these ancient stone backdrops, paired with a great local wine, was an absolute treat. Exploring the Verzasca and Maggia valleys is discovering a completely different side of Switzerland, more mystical, warmer, deeply Italian at heart, and with an unforgettable flavor.
