Mount Pilatus | Lucerne’s Icon Above the City

I had just arrived to live in Lucerne when I visited Mount Pilatus for the first time. It was one of the very first attractions I explored, and it quickly became clear why this mountain is so important to the city. Pilatus is everywhere in Lucerne: in street names, local businesses, and everyday conversations. It is truly the city’s emblematic mountain.

The day I went, the weather was far from perfect. Heavy rain, strong wind, patches of snow, and thick fog made it almost impossible to see the panoramic views. Yet, despite that, the experience was still incredibly powerful. The atmosphere felt moody, quiet, and deeply melancholic, giving the mountain a mysterious and almost poetic character.

Rising to about 2,128 meters, Mount Pilatus is famous for its hiking trails, viewpoints, and its historic cogwheel railway, one of the steepest in the world. Even when the views are hidden, Pilatus remains impressive. It does not always reveal itself, but it always leaves a lasting impression.
