Greece | Islands of Light, Mythology and the Aegean Sea

My trip to Greece left me with an unforgettable lesson: choosing the right time of year to travel changes everything, and peak summer is definitely not the best choice for visiting this country. Arriving during that season brought a brutal physical challenge under a relentless, unforgiving sun.

Athens is a fascinating city where ancient history and modern life intertwine, but trying to hike up to the Acropolis at the wrong time of day put me to the test… literally! At 43°C, the stifling heat got the best of me, and I fainted right there. After resting for a bit and staying hydrated, I gave it another shot, though honestly, it’s something I definitely wouldn’t do again.

That being said, once at the top, it was completely worth it: the view from the summit is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever experienced. Standing there, taking in the majesty of the Parthenon, surrounded by white marble that has endured for thousands of years, completely shifts your perspective. Imposing temples carved against the deep blue sky make you feel small in the face of history.

Then I traveled to the islands and found the saving grace of the Aegean Sea’s waters. My first stop was Santorini, an island that ended up leaving an indelible mark on my memory. I still remember the feeling of seeing its iconic white houses with soft blue details clinging dramatically to the edge of volcanic cliffs, with bright domes and golden glimmers capturing the midday sun. Watching the sunset there was like seeing the sky deliberately paint itself in shades of gold and fire before my eyes, a silent spectacle that overwhelmed me and demanded absolute reverence.

Mykonos, on the other hand, is pure party energy. The best celebrations happen right on the beachfront, with your feet in the sand, live performances, and people dancing to the rhythm of electronic music; it’s absolute madness!

However, the true heart of the journey revealed itself through a happy accident on the way to Ios. A mistake when booking our ferry tickets completely altered our itinerary. On long trips, the illusion of control quickly dissolves, and plans change without warning. Often, it’s precisely these logistical stumbles that lead us to the most profound discoveries. Ios welcomed us with a vibrant, unexpected energy, a haven of music, cocktails, youth, and that rare sense of an endless summer that makes you completely forget the passage of time.

In the end, Greece reveals itself not just through picture-perfect postcards, but through its light, its sea, and the living mystery of its ancient myths. Visiting the birthplace of great thinkers like Plato and Aristotle brings a unique sense of awe; there is a special energy in walking the very land where ideas that changed the world were born. Standing among ruins dedicated to colossal gods like Zeus, you realize that Athens is a reminder that the most memorable travel stories are rarely the ones that go according to plan. They are the ones we discover when we allow ourselves to connect with history, letting ourselves be carried away into an emotional space where every corner is not just explored, but truly savored with the soul.
